THE TEMPERING EFFECT

The wine-growing regions of the world are classified into three broad climates that determine the styles of wines made and the varieties that can be grown well.

Maritime regions are those wine regions near the sea, including Bordeaux and much of New Zealand. They are defined by a more consistent yearround temperature, due to the moderating effect of the sea, and can often be subject to higher rainfall and humidity than other climates.

Continental regions are those inland regions, not near large bodies of water, that have a large difference between their highest and lowest temperatures, including regions such as Burgundy, Rioja, Mendoza and Piedmont.

Mediterranean climates are those that are generally warmer and drier than either the continental or maritime climates, and that maintain a warmer temperature throughout winter.
